Natural History Muesum x Lucy & Yak

The collection was informed by research within the Museum’s archive, drawing from historic scientific drawings and records of dinosaur skeletons, minerals, rocks and crystals. Spending time behind the scenes with original illustrations by early naturalists and geologists revealed a rich visual language rooted in observation and curiosity.

My print development focused on mineral studies, using marbled textures, swirling forms and layered colour inspired by these archival references. One green mineral illustration became a key influence, echoing mark-making and motifs I have explored in my print work previously.

The Natural History Museum’s identity is inseparable from its dinosaurs, so their inclusion felt essential. I was given access to archival drawings and sketches, working from a volume titled Extinct Monsters, which documented not only dinosaurs but other long-lost creatures such as giant sloths.

Using the Museum’s digitised archive, I developed the prints digitally, taking care to preserve the integrity of the original illustrations. For the Ragan print, I focused on dinosaur skeleton drawings, combining multiple references into a single composition without altering the original line work.
